R/audiophile is a subreddit for the pursuit of quality audio reproduction of all forms, budgets, and sizes of speakers. phile: a person with love for, affinity towards or obsession with high-quality playback of sound and music.Audirvana is a French company which was founded in 2011 by Damien Plisson, a developer highly respected within the audiophile community. My trouble is I read and I’ve been reading a fair few comments about Roon eating Audirvana for UI and that Audirvana V3.5 eats Roon for SQ. From the start, the company that created the hi-fi software player for Mac, Audirvana Plus, quickly gained recognition from audiophiles around the world. Thanks to its reliability and enhanced audio. And just from my experience today, Studio sounds better than 3.5 and that’s more important for me. I think Audirvana SQ is very good and it can sound better than Roon 1.8 if connecting a computer directly to a DAC via USB. No doubt this is dependent on the computer and the DAC being used. Moved to Roon, which although not perfect, is less buggy. The Native Qobuz app also sounded better than Roon in my setup when going from an LPS powered 2012 Mac Mini to my DAC via USB. Audirvna allows you to wirelessly stream your music to your system without any loss of quality. I have a copy of the new one on my computer at the moment, and it could only manage to find 63 out of the 5,000 albums I have on my NAS drive, Roon and even simple Naim software picks them all up fine. The software uses the Universal Plug n Play (UPnP) protocol, installed on over 7 billion devices worldwide. If your system is compatible, you can select it from the audio devices list available on your network and start playing your music. However, Roon sounds best when used to an endpoint over ethernet and seems to be optimized for this type of server setup. Once I connected Roon in this manner, to a Sonore ultraRendu endpoint, I found it considerably superior to Audirvana on the Mac connected via USB to my DAC. Roon vs Audirvana 3.5 JeremyJones (Jeremy Jones) May 15, 2019, 3:20am 1 For contextI’ve got a Roon lifelong subscription and have long believed that Roon sets the standard for music player SQ. Player SQ is very close when both are streamed over ethernet to the ultraRendu endpoint - Roon RAAT or Audirvana via DLNA (but as you noted, Roon has far superior UI/functionality). So far the consensus of opinions posted here favor Audirvana over Roon for sound quality and Roon for interface, Roon radio and additional info on the music played. Why Roon Is An Audiophile Essential: Protons and Neutrons In A Nutshell. On top of this, we all know about it’s unmatched functionality. ![]() As one poster stated, Roon support suggested modifications to the output to enhance the SQ. For people who have a library of stored music, or are planning to build one, who also stream music from Tidal and/or Qobuz, Roon is one solution along with a number of other so-called media players. These others include Amarra, J River, and Audirvana Studio to name a few. Last night I thought I’d give the updated Audirvana 3.5 a good listen. If I use HQPlayer NAA streaming I prefer Roon SQ. ![]()
